Comparison of Categorical Color Perception in Two Estrildid Finches

چکیده
Sensory systems are predicted to be adapted the perception of important stimuli, such as signals used in communication. Prior work has shown that female zebra finches perceive carotenoid-based orange-red coloration male beaks—a mate choice signal—categorically. Specifically, females exhibited an increased ability discriminate between colors from opposite sides a perceptual category boundary than equally different same side boundary. The Bengalese finch, estrildid finch related is black, brown, and white, lacking carotenoid coloration. To explore relationship categorical color signal use, we tested using continuum finches, also how both species discriminated among differing systematically hue brightness. Unlike found no evidence finches. Instead, combination chromatic distance (hue difference) Michelson contrast (difference brightness) strongly correlated with discrimination on all pairs pattern was finches: this strong correlation held when discriminating categories but not within category. These experiments suggest universal feature avian—or even finch—vision. Our findings provide further insights into mechanism underlying consistent hypothesis for perception.

Color Categorical Perception
Categorical perception (CP) occurs when discrimination of items that cross category boundaries is faster or more accurate than discrimination of exemplars from the same category. Categorical perception of color is observed when, for example, a green stimulus and a blue stimulus are more easily distinguished than two stimuli from the same color category (e.g., two different shades of green). Col...

The aim of this investigation was to examine the time course and the relative contributions of perceptual and post-perceptual processes to categorical perception (CP) of color. A visual oddball task was used with standard and deviant stimuli from same (within-category) or different (between-category) categories, with chromatic separations for within-and between-category stimuli equated in Munse...

متن کاملAre Olfactory Cues Involved in Nest Recognition in Two Social Species of Estrildid Finches?
Reliably recognizing their own nest provides parents with a necessary skill to invest time and resources efficiently in raising their offspring and thereby maximising their own reproductive success. Studies investigating nest recognition in adult birds have focused mainly on visual cues of the nest or the nest site and acoustic cues of the nestlings. To determine whether adult songbirds also us...
